A beautiful one-day trip out of Berlin, is to the city of Magdeburg (pronounced: mug-deb-boor-g). The regional train to Magdeburg departs from the Zoologischer Garten railway station, near Kurfuerstendamm. It takes an hour and a half directly, up to two hours if trains are changed.
