A Walking route to Charlottenburg Palace and its environs - Royal Brock

Most of this walking along this route takes place around the Charlottenburg Palace and the Park surrounding it. We may continue then walking southwards, along the street called Schlossstrasse (The palace street).

The palace is located in Charlottenburg district. Charlottenburg (pronounced: Shaar-lo-ten-boorg)was a small village, west of 17th century's Berlin, and was called then Lietzen. It has become since one of Berlin's main quarters, not least thanks to the palace built by Sophie Charlotte, wife of Prince Friedrich (Frederick) 3rd, who later became the first king of Prussia. The palace is called Lietznburg, and was surrounded by luxury homes of courtiers.

After the death of Sophie Charlotte in 1705, the whole settlement that developed around the palace received the name Charlottenburg, and the status of a city.

A vacation resort that became a city

Early 19th century Charlottenburg was a vacation resort. In the second half of the century it spread westward toward the adjacent city of Spandau. In 1882 Charlottenburg was connected to the urban railway ring of Berlin, and soon it became an industrial city. Big entrepreneurs, such as Siemens, built factories there. In 1879  the Technical High School (today Technical University) was established in the city.

In the following years, a rapid Construction of residential neighborhoods took place in Charlottenburg. Early 20th century it was already one of the wealthiest cities in Germany.

In 1920 Charlottenburg was annexed to greater berlin, as one of its quarters.

After the 2nd World War and the division of Berlin,  Charlottenburg became the central district of West Berlin. Today Charlottenburg is merged with the neighboring district Wilmersdorf.
