A walk through Tiergarten, from the Reichstag building to Embassies' quarter

Transportation to the starting point: S-Bahn lines 1, 2, 25 and 26 (station Unter Den Linden); Bus 100

This route begins where the previous route, along the Unter den Linden Avenue, ends - at the Brandenburg gate, and is its natural continuation westwards if you still have enough power to go on. The Walking track in Tiergarten district incorporates interesting buildings with a large and beautiful park. On our way, we can sit on a park bench and enjoy the peaceful flora.

We start our walk in the Republic square on the western edge of which the Reichstag building stands. From there we shall walk northwards through the new campus of the Government of Germany.

We shall see there the "Band des Bundes" ("the band of the federation") which is a sequence of government buildings linked to each other like a ribbon (Band), from east to west. It includes the Marie Elisabeth Lueders House, across the Spree river. This building accomodates the third largest parliamentary library in the world and an auditorium.

The next building to the east is the Paul Loebe house which contains around 1,000 offices for the members of the federal Parliament of Germany. The Bands' westernmost building is the Bundeskanzleramt, where the office of the Prime minister of Germany is located. Behind this building, a few meters to the south the House of the Cultures of the World is placed, and further southwards we shall arrive at the Bell Tower.

We shall return from there to the governmental complex. The adjacent building to the north is of the Swiss embassy. It was built in 1870 and was originally a residential house. In 1995 it was rebuilt by Swiss architects.

A Soviet mansion and the Holocaust memorial

Walking back southwards along the Spree bank we shall arrive at the ARD radio and television studios in Berlin. ARD (Arbeitsgemeinschaft der oeffentlich rechtlichen Rundfunkanstalten der Bundesrepublik) the German Public Broadcasting Network.

We shall now continue moving southwards, back to the Branderburg gate and the Paris' square. One of the beautiful buildings bordering the square, is the French embassy. If we continue walking along the Unter den Linden's avenue, we shall see the Russian embassy, an ex-Stalinist mansion.

Going back and turning south we shall see the British embassy on our way. Back in the southern part of the Paris' square we shall see the American embassy. From there we shall walk southwards along the street called Ebert Strasse.

Our next stop will be at the Memorial to the murdered Jews of Europe (Denkmal fuer die ermodeten Juden Europas).

The vast memorial was built according to plans of the New York architect Peter Eisenman. It is made of 2,711 concrete blocks. There is also a small Holocaust museum below the street level.

After visiting the museum, we continue a bit southwards and then turn right westwards, along the street which borders the Park and the Kulturforum (Forum of culture). On the northern edge of the Forum, the yellow building of the Philharmonic orchestra is seen.

The embassies' quarter

Walking further westwards we arrive at the Embassies' quarter.

Every country has invested a lot of money and imagination in order to build the mansion which represents it.

From there we shall continue walking northwards along the Hofjaegeralle until we reach the Big star crossroads'. In the middle of this square the Column of Victory is located.

Walking further to the north, we shall arrive at the Presidential palace, which is called Schloss Bellevue, and its park Schlosspark Bellevue.
